Carolane B, while sitting on a 4-5 meter high garden wall with friends and sisters, fell when a stone gave way beneath her hand. She landed head-first on the stone, suffering a broken nose and head injury requiring stitches. During approximately 10 minutes of unconsciousness, she experienced a black void where she felt no pain and complete calm. She questioned if she was dreaming but remained aware and thinking clearly. She heard her young sisters crying but felt no sorrow. A woman's calm voice told her to open her eyes and try. She felt as if floating in the air in a lying position, feeling peaceful and good. When she regained consciousness, everything appeared fuzzy, and she discovered blood on her face. Her friend's mother took her to the hospital for treatment. The experience felt like it lasted hours though she was told it was only ten minutes. Following this event, she developed a belief in life after death and reduced fear of dying.
