Carmen V experienced a shared death experience during a medical procedure related to terminating a pregnancy with Trisomy 18. After having Laminaria seaweed sticks inserted at the hospital, she felt the floor giving way beneath her feet and fainted in the hallway. While unconscious, she witnessed a hole open in the side of the hospital building and saw a small cloud-like tuft - her baby's spirit - move out of her body, through the building, and upward toward the sky. She perceived many welcoming beings in white surrounded by whiteness, turned toward and welcoming the departing spirit. The experience included sensing beautiful, comforting, peaceful music, though not auditory. She wanted to follow the spirit upward but felt the weight of her body anchoring her. Upon regaining consciousness, she found herself on the cold hospital floor with a doctor leaning over her. During the walk home, she told her partner she could feel the baby was gone - the sense of life inside her had vanished, leaving her feeling empty and alone. This profound experience gave her a sense of spirituality and belief in some form of afterlife.
