At age nine in 1945, Bob stepped into deep water way over his head and began drowning. After several attempts to bounce from the bottom to catch air, he ingested too much water and died. While dying, he was initially terrified but only for a few seconds before a profound calm and peace came over him that he still vividly remembers nearly 70 years later. He was surrounded by warm light and a peace that exceeded understanding, and felt he was going toward the light. The next thing he knew, he was lying on the bank being pounded on with pain in his chest as someone resuscitated him. The experience had a maturing effect and became the beginning of his spiritual search. He went from being uncertain about God to definitely believing, and developed a deep understanding that there was nothing to worry about in death. The peace he experienced was so profound that no words can adequately convey it. He learned that we need to forgive everything and that love, though indescribable using human language, is central to the experience.
