Beth was electrocuted when she touched a clothes dryer with a known electrical short while reaching behind it to plug in a water pump. Her body went rigid and she screamed soundlessly before losing consciousness. She found herself floating in peaceful blackness, heading somewhere with a sense of calm and quiet. In this state, she felt she knew all the secrets of the universe and experienced incredible peace and joy. She felt completely at one with everything and was happy to be there. Her sister-in-law found her unconscious, eyes open, not breathing, and dragged her off with a broomstick. A police officer who had arrived to pick her up for babysitting performed CPR and saved her life. Beth was angry to be back in her body and worried about her mother's reaction to the police presence. The experience profoundly changed her relationship with death and her understanding of existence.
