In August 2002, Mary, a registered nurse, suffered catastrophic injuries in an accident. She broke both hips, femurs, pelvis, all ribs, had ARDS requiring ventilation, flail chest, splenectomy, fractured kidneys, open abdomen for three months, necrotizing pancreatitis, lacerated liver, septic shock, broken bones throughout her body, and required tracheotomy. She coded five times with only 5% survival chance. During one crisis when her blood pressure and heart rate fell, she watched from above as medical staff worked on her. She heard and saw everything clearly, observing the chaos as the doctor struggled to get a central line. She saw a paramedic slap her and drop her arm. Most significantly, she experienced being held in Jesus's arms, seeing only a red garment and arms but feeling complete peace and safety. After the experience, she began to heal. She miraculously returned to work as a nurse in 10.5 months with no residual effects. The experience eliminated her claustrophobia and fear of death, greatly increased her compassion, and strengthened her faith from uncertain to absolute certainty in God's existence.
