In mid-winter 1969 in Northern Ontario, 9-year-old Mary fell through ice while crossing a road and became trapped under thick ice. She flailed trying to find the hole but couldn't locate it. After initial panic and breathing in water, she experienced total calm. She went from freezing and silently screaming to feeling incredible warmth and happiness. She was bathed in light, no longer feeling wet or weighed down. The light surrounded and directed her forward. She felt perfect, overwhelming love comparable only to later holding her newborn sons. She experienced a cold, dark pulling that she resisted. Her next memory was throwing up while a stranger held her. The woman had seen her go down, initially drove on, but felt compelled to return. She found the hole, couldn't pull Mary out, and used an ice scraper to widen it. Mary was underwater 4-5 minutes and required resuscitation. Her father told her the light would be there when she was old, but she had much to do. The experience eliminated her fear of death and led her from organized religion to personal spirituality.
