On July 16, 1957, Martha was in the hospital for delivery of her fourth child. What began as a normal delivery suddenly became critical with increased activity in the delivery room. She lost consciousness and experienced clinical death. During this time, she encountered a very bright, welcoming light in a warm, loving environment. Though not in a city or landscape, she was surrounded by this wonderful bright light. She approached an indistinct group of beings with no bodily form hovering near a central figure wearing a flowing robe. She sensed this central figure was God. She had a choice to join them or return to life, feeling wonderful joy and peace. The decision was suddenly made for her. She became aware of a nurse slapping her face saying "breathe, breathe." The next day she required a blood transfusion. The doctor warned her not to have more children as he likely wouldn't be able to save either her or the baby next time. The experience increased her empathy, understanding, and patience with others, particularly helping her as a teacher with her students.
