On October 20, 1986, Marta was involved in a car accident where another vehicle crossed into her path. She lost consciousness from a traumatic brain injury. During her unconscious state, she experienced an out-of-body experience where she found herself observing the scene from above. She saw herself on the bed looking back at a presence behind her. She questioned why everyone was so anxious about the situation while feeling completely peaceful herself. She attempted to scream but was unable to produce sound. Her heightened senses allowed her to hear whispering voices much more clearly than normal, though she could not touch or smell anything. She entered what she described as a clearly mystical realm characterized by overwhelming peace and happiness. She felt no longer in conflict with nature and experienced a barrier she was not permitted to cross. Her brother's shouting eventually brought her back to consciousness. The experience strengthened her belief in God from uncertain to definite existence and left her with lasting peaceful memories that she considers more real and accurate than other life events from that time.
