In January 2014, Marshall was involved in a severe car accident when a truck hit his Honda Civic at 50 mph while he was crossing a four-lane street. He was dazed and blacked out for several minutes. During his unconscious state, he experienced a profound NDE. He saw what appeared to be a city in the clouds, experiencing vast amounts of sunlight. This vision moved super-fast initially. Then he experienced a life review where flashes of his life passed by over 2-3 minutes, though it seemed much longer in his altered state of consciousness. The life review proceeded in slow motion, like watching an old-fashioned movie theater. He described feeling incredible peace and being "at peace" during the experience. When his sister shook him awake calling his name, he returned to consciousness. The experience was so peaceful that he expressed a desire to return to that state. He came away convinced that hell is Earth, and his belief in God strengthened from "probably exists" to "definitely exists." His fear of death was completely eliminated after the experience.
