Mark experienced internal hemorrhaging during chronic liver and kidney failure in February 2014. Over 12 hours he was in and out of consciousness with hallucinations. He started sweating blood and was moved to ICU where he lost life signs according to monitors. He had an out-of-body experience floating over his body, watching the medical team apply emergency shock while his wife and friend cried. He felt complete lack of pain and elation from leaving the pain. He saw a cartoon character resembling Mr. Crab from SpongeBob in orange and green. Everything he saw was confirmed by doctors, his wife and her friend. As a staunch atheist, he was surprised by the OBE but maintained his atheism. The experience brought him humility, compassion and greater appreciation for people in his life.
