Barbara had routine sinus surgery but stopped breathing twice during recovery from anesthesia, possibly related to sleep apnea. She experienced what seemed like a vivid dream of walking toward a beautiful brick house on a sunny day with colorful flowers. Everything appeared brighter and more vivid than normal. She approached an illuminated, sparkly front door and reached for the doorknob, feeling no fear and wanting to enter. Just as she touched it, she heard staff calling her name. She experienced multiple episodes of consciousness, seeing herself on the table with a breathing mask while staff said "She's gone spastic" and worked to revive her. The doctor later confirmed she had stopped breathing twice and they thought they were losing her. The surgery that should have taken 1.5 hours extended to 1:30pm (nearly 5 hours). She was eventually stabilized and released that evening. The experience reinforced her Christian faith and belief in the afterlife.
