Marsha, who has epilepsy, fell and split her forehead open, requiring emergency treatment. At the hospital, she began having continuous seizures. Medical staff tried liquid valium and other drugs directly into her heart, but the combination stopped both her heart and lungs. She was clinically dead for almost eight minutes before her family doctor insisted on continuing resuscitation efforts, successfully bringing her back.
During those eight minutes, Marsha saw everything taking place in the intensive care unit. She tried telling doctors and nurses she was all right, but no one could hear her. She later recounted minute-by-minute exactly what occurred in the room. Her family doctor said he'd never had a patient come back and describe what happened while clinically dead. Marsha passed through a very long, dark tunnel toward a bright but beautiful light. She encountered her grandfather whom no family photos existed of, except one taken at his funeral. When her living grandfather visited and brought that photo, Marsha accurately described the deceased grandfather's appearance and burial clothes.
