A college freshman experienced an NDE after scraping his toe and passing out while watching friends play basketball. Upon losing consciousness, he entered absolute darkness which he recognized as "the void" or "abyss." Several hooded, ethereal beings of faded sepia color appeared on both sides of him. Initially thinking they were his friends surrounding his unconscious body, he realized they were otherworldly beings who lifted him through a tunnel of light. He felt content and warm in the void-darkness initially, but upon realizing what was happening, tried to yell and shake free, finding he had no voice and possibly no body. After passing through the light tunnel, he regained consciousness on the grass, seeing his friends still playing basketball below. The experience reinforced his existing spiritual beliefs about balance, unity, and the meaning of life. He gained understanding that both positive and negative experiences are part of existence and must be balanced rather than blocked out.
