Susan underwent cardiac ablation surgery that went catastrophically wrong when the surgeon punctured her heart wall. She bled into the pericardial sac, causing cardiac tamponade. Her heart stopped for 39 minutes total, requiring 3,900 chest compressions and 15 defibrillation attempts. During this time, she had multiple observations from outside her body. She heard a nurse say "her face is white, her face is gray" which was later confirmed by OR staff. She was aware of being "beat up" during chest compressions and saw herself in a black box with thick walls. She then experienced complete peace and acceptance, thinking "this is how it's going to end for me." She saw a white dome of leaded glass in various shades of white beyond her feet. She also observed herself from above as a nurse approached with Heparin twice, feeling the nurse was "bad" and wanting to fight her off but being paralyzed. After induced hypothermia coma for 48 hours, she recovered. The experience eliminated her fear of death, led to major life changes including weight loss, early retirement, and prioritizing family over work.
