Thirteen-year-old Maryann was dying from a severe allergic reaction to rabies antitoxin, developing life-threatening serum sickness with extreme pain that made childbirth seem minor by comparison. In the emergency room, she was given alternating purple and red-topped syringes for pain management.
During the experience, she floated above the room in the corner with 360-degree vision, feeling great with a light behind her. From her elevated position, she could see the bed tray above her bed where the nurse had prepared another purple and red needle - something she couldn't have seen lying down. She suddenly returned to her body in pain and watched the nurse give her the purple needle she had observed from above. Years later as a nurse, Maryann learned the significance of the syringe colors: purple caps indicate 19-gauge needles for intramuscular narcotics (Demerol), while red caps indicate smaller needles for steroids. Her medical records confirmed she received these exact medications.
