On January 9, 2013, Shannon went in for gallbladder surgery but threw two blood clots that became pulmonary embolisms. She experienced complete pulmonary and cardiac arrest for over an hour, requiring extensive resuscitation efforts with CPR. Once stabilized, she remained in a coma for three days. The medical team used bright lights to check her pupils when they brought her back, which she found painful to recall. The extended cardiac arrest resulted in brain damage from oxygen deprivation, affecting her short-term memory.
During her near-death experience, Shannon found herself in a waiting room-like space where she saw many deceased family members and friends, though they all had their backs turned to her except for her husband's grandmother. She later learned this grandmother had passed away the same day she did. Shannon and the grandmother were trying to figure out what was happening, as Shannon could not communicate with anyone else but her. She was particularly heartbroken that she couldn't talk to her deceased fourteen-year-old son who was present. An elevator-like door opened, revealing a glimpse of Heaven that Shannon describes as the Garden of Eden the way God intended it to be. The scene was breathtakingly beautiful beyond words. From one of the mountains came a figure glowing with warm, peaceful white-golden light. As he approached, Shannon recognized him as Jesus, still bearing the holes in his hands. Jesus told her she still had a job to do, after which she felt stuck in a vacuum. The experience ended with a very bright flashing light that she hated and associates with the medical team's resuscitation efforts. Following the experience, Shannon has developed gifts she's hesitant to discuss for fear of being thought crazy. Her family has become closer than ever before. She no longer fears death and understands that Heaven is real and indescribably beautiful. Despite having just given birth before this incident, she initially felt anger rather than gratitude about being brought back, showing the profound impact of experiencing that divine realm.
