Around 1974, teenage Sarah and her friend discovered a reservoir area with a stone wall where water flowed over from a dark smooth body of water on the left into a churning, frothing reservoir on the right. While attempting to cross the narrow walkway atop the wall, Sarah's feet slipped and she fell into the left side, holding briefly to the wall's edge before being swept counter-clockwise into the dangerous churning water on the right side. She was pulled from the reservoir by good Samaritans who had been nearby, though remarkably she recalls no water coming from her nose or mouth afterward.
During the drowning incident, Sarah had a profound out-of-body experience where she found herself looking down at her body lying at the bottom of the reservoir. The area around her body was mysteriously illuminated, as if someone had left a light on underwater. She distinctly remembers the thought "I'm dead" or possibly hearing "You are dead" accompanying this observation. The viewing perspective was from above, seeing her body resting at the bottom like a heavy weight rather than floating in the dark, foaming waters. She felt a sense of empathy for "the poor child lying there dead" while experiencing this detached observation. The emotional quality of the experience was characterized by calm acknowledgment rather than alarm. There was no fear, just a factual recognition of being dead. The illuminated area in the otherwise dark water seemed to create a distinct space, almost like being in a crystalline encasement where the water's presence was felt but not its crushing weight. Time seemed to have an ethereal quality during the experience. Sarah describes feeling as though something significant occurred that day, possibly involving some form of consciousness transfer or spiritual intervention. After being pulled from the water, Sarah was driven to her sister's house where the rescuer stayed for dinner. She has had recurring drowning dreams since childhood, suggesting the profound impact of this experience. The lasting effect has been a sense of having experienced something beyond normal reality, though she remains uncertain about many aspects including the existence of God. The experience left her feeling that she had been shown something important about the nature of death and consciousness.
