Martin experienced volvulus of the small bowel requiring emergency surgery in April 1975. His intestines had twisted 180 degrees around adhesions from previous surgery, cutting off blood supply and causing extreme pain. He was given pre-anesthetic and taken to the operating theater.
During the procedure, Martin rose up from his body toward the ceiling, stopping near the bright operating light.
