During a severe depression in NYC in 1979, Merida mixed sleeping pills with alcohol and called 911. She had a seizure and the paramedics tried to revive her. She experienced watching herself from above her body as paramedics worked on her. She then went through a tunnel described as inevitable - "you have no reason not to go through the tunnel." She found herself whirling around the earth and first saw limbo with confused spirits who had no idea where they were, spinning like helpless ghosts. She then found herself over the Caribbean in the stars and was asked a binary YES/NO question about whether she had lived a life of love and giving. She saw heaven filled with beautiful children singing like a choir - "of course the children, the blameless, the helpless." She answered NO to the question, feeling she hadn't lived that life yet and wished to be ready. She was then sent back. The experience occurred around the time she lost hundreds of friends to HIV/AIDS. She felt no fear, complete ease and acceptance, understanding there was nothing to worry about and never had been. The emotions were deeply satisfying and real. She later wrote a poem called "Bring back the question" about the profound binary question asked by what she believes was God.
