At age 19, while drunk, Matthew smashed a window with his forearm and severed an artery. He bled profusely and passed out in his friend's car. He found himself floating about five feet above a hospital gurney, looking down at two doctors checking his pulse and blood pressure, calmly discussing that he had neither. He realized he was looking at his lifeless body and started screaming repeatedly that he wasn't dead. He began rising about ten feet, then experienced bright white light all around him. He opened his eyes ten hours later seeing his mother. He had been given Haldol and four tranquilizers because upon returning to life he had struck everyone around him, injuring a nurse's wrist, though he has no memory of this violence. The experience was characterized by incredibly fast thoughts, instant understanding of his situation despite having been drunk, and complete mental clarity without internal conflict. He was surrounded by bright white light and felt the calmest feeling he had ever experienced. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his belief in afterlife.
