Rachel experienced a severe hemorrhage during an emergency C-section after delivering her daughter. While under spinal anesthesia, she became aware that something was wrong as monitor alarms sounded. Everything suddenly went black and silent, but she remained sharply aware of her essential self. In this thick, still darkness, she heard a kind, knowing voice say "you can go now." Initially enthusiastic about going, she then remembered her children and the complications of her previous daughter's birth. She told the voice "No, wait, I can't go now." The voice urgently replied "Then you HAVE to wake up." She found a lighter patch in the darkness and concentrated on returning, eventually opening her eyes back in the operating theater. The anesthesiologist had been holding her hand throughout the crisis. The experience stripped her to her essential core, where only love remained.
