On January 3, 1988, Polly was hit by a taxicab while crossing a street after seeing "Moonstruck." She was struck and flipped twice in the air before hitting the ground. During the incident, she experienced complete blackness with sharp awareness, knowing she was separate from her body and floating above it. She felt confused about where her body was but maintained a sense of calm. She felt confined in a narrow space, possibly a tunnel, and demanded to know what was happening to her body. Despite witnesses thinking the accident looked fatal, she walked away with only a mild concussion. The experience opened her to the possibility of consciousness existing beyond the physical body, transforming her from an atheist to someone who believes in God and an afterlife.
