At age 10-11, Marilyn dove into a swimming pool to see how long she could hold her breath. When ready to surface, someone dove on top of her and she got tangled underwater. Terrified and flailing, she then realized she was dying and accepted it, feeling incredible peace, safety, and calm. She had a child's version of life review, remembering to say the prayer nuns taught for death. She watched happy memories play out in speeded-up time, particularly remembering being four in the kitchen while her mom baked cookies, with all details clear including smell and joy. After surrendering to dying, it became light underwater, her body stopped struggling, and she somehow floated to the surface and crawled out. The experience taught her that life review is not scary or condemning with no shame, and that death feels peaceful, warm and happy once accepted. She maintains strong faith and no longer fears death.
