During a bilateral TMJ arthroplasty surgery, Lori experienced uncontrolled hemorrhaging from a vessel at the base of her brain. While under general anesthesia, she found herself standing at the bottom of the operating table in a very bright room. She distinctly heard the surgeon say "where is all this damn blood coming from?!" and saw blood all over the surgeon and on the floor. She then experienced being moved very fast while the surgeon held her neck, heard him say "we need to get consent" for emergent angiography. She lost 40% of her blood within seconds and required 3 pints transfused. Upon waking 5 days later in ICU from a medically induced coma, she told her mother she hated the surgeon because "he messed everything up" and asked why she had to have blood - before anyone told her what happened. The surgeon confirmed she nearly died and that he kept this information from her until she was stable. At follow-up, he told her she gave him gray hair from the stress of the incident.
