Paul was working as a controller at 1:30 AM when he began coughing uncontrollably and felt his windpipe slam shut completely. He remained calm and directed his coworker Paul ('Gripper') to perform the Heimlich maneuver. During the choking crisis, Paul experienced leaving his body and drifting to the side, disconnected from his physical form. While out of body, he heard a voice explaining 'You don't need to breathe, your body needs to breathe, you don't.' The voice seemed to come from behind and within him, providing practical responses to his questions about his condition. Paul felt no fear during the experience and accepted his situation without panic. He was preparing to explore his new state when he suddenly returned to his body as Gripper successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver and cleared his airway. The coworker confirmed that Paul never blacked out during the entire incident, supporting Paul's claim of continuous consciousness while out of body.
