Seven-year-old Kathleen was at a church gathering for picnicking and swimming when she walked out on a pier to the deep water. Feeling brave despite not knowing how to swim, she jumped in, confident she could reach the pier edge. When she surfaced, she discovered she couldn't reach the edge and desperately tried to kick sideways to reach the ledge, but couldn't maneuver her legs properly. She went under feet-first, experiencing total panic while ingesting water.
After the initial panic, Kathleen's consciousness shifted dramatically. She found herself under the water experiencing "the peace that passeth all understanding." She became aware of being both in her body and simultaneously seeing herself about five feet away as a formless presence that she recognized as herself. From this formless self came words - either "I am never going to die" or "you are never going to die" - with the message seeming to come from both perspectives simultaneously. She experienced the actual sensation of eternal existence, understanding foreverness in that moment. Her attention was drawn to her left side where she perceived pure black velvet - not just visually but as a texture of pure peace. This black velvet formation was somewhat tunnel-like but not clearly defined as a tunnel, wrapping around her like a soft blanket. She was completely absorbed in the textures, peace, calm, and contentment, existing in a timeless state where everything was "now." The combination of the eternal message and the enveloping peaceful darkness created a profound sense of safety and eternal existence. Someone grabbed her hair and pulled her from the water, ending the experience. She has no memory of the rescue or immediate aftermath, only hearing voices saying her aunt would be angry. Her main thought was wishing they would leave her alone to stay with the peaceful feeling. The experience eliminated her fear of death and gave her certainty about eternal existence. She gained deep compassion for others and understanding that all people are connected as one everlasting consciousness. Throughout her life, she has experienced many other dimensional experiences, with this drowning NDE remaining the most significant in establishing her understanding of eternal life.
