Karen was an 18-year-old who underwent surgery and experienced complications approximately three days later. She recalls being worked on by nurses and doctors, watching from above as they performed compressions and used a bag valve mask to help her breathe. She was not breathing for at least 3-5 minutes, and witnesses reported her skin turned blue and black from lack of oxygen. During this medical crisis, she experienced leaving her body and floating upward.
From her out-of-body position above her body, Karen observed the medical team working on her physical form, which she no longer identified as herself. She felt completely detached from the body below, viewing it as "not me anymore." She floated toward a bright, warm light that was indescribably beautiful with the clearest, brightest colors she had ever seen. She saw angels with wings and, though she never saw God directly, she knew He was present. She communicated with God through thought rather than speech, begging to be allowed to stay on Earth to raise her seven-month-old daughter Maria and complete her college education. Key observations included watching the medical team performing chest compressions on her body and seeing them use the bag valve mask for ventilation. She noted her father's desperate efforts to help and his shaking of her body. She was aware of the hustle and bustle of the medical team's activities while feeling complete peace and detachment from the situation. The light she moved toward was described as completely different from any earthly light - white, indescribably bright, and accompanied by perfect, clear, bright colors. After pleading with God to let her stay for her daughter, Karen fell back into her body and woke up several days later. She had suffered serious injuries requiring extended hospitalization. The experience left her without fear of death, understanding that the body is just a shell and that consciousness continues. She gained certainty about the afterlife while still questioning whether she might have given up her only chance to go to heaven by choosing to return.
