Lael experienced a severe eclamptic convulsion the day after giving birth on April 25, 1968, which was so severe that her heart stopped. Initially feeling only cold, her soul floated up out of her body until she reached ceiling level in her hospital room. Looking down, she saw her dead body on the bed and felt a moment of regret, comparing it to seeing a beautiful purebred dog dead on the highway - it was a good body that had served her well, but that phase of existence was over. She observed medical personnel scrambling to resuscitate her and wished she could tell them not to bother. Floating through the ceiling, plenum, and roof of the building, she found herself outside in palpable darkness pierced by a brilliant shaft of white light, similar to an aircraft searchlight. She fell upward through this light until reaching a threshold point of no return, where she was stopped. Within the light were all the love, beauty, acceptance, and bliss imaginable - a perfection beyond description. Lael knew God was behind that light and desperately wanted to join the beings she sensed were with Him. However, a voice said "Go back. It isn't time." The remarkable aspect was that this voice had the exact timbre, pace, pitch, and pronunciation of her day-old son's adult voice, which she would recognize years later when he grew up. The light disappeared and she woke up in her body, sick, hurting, and bitterly disappointed. This experience completely changed her, removing all fear of death and giving her knowledge that God handles people gently at the end, with only joy awaiting those who cross the final barrier. The experience also awakened her ability to sense past lives in herself and others, and gave her knowledge of premortal existence and the continuity of soul experiences across multiple lifetimes.
