Kevin experienced a heart attack at work on November 20, 2009, which resulted in clinical death with cessation of breathing, heart function, and brain function. During his near-death experience, Kevin maintained awareness of his surroundings and the medical personnel working on him for only a few seconds before becoming disassociated from external input. He observed a shimmering, portal-like wreath that would enlarge and shrink in size, appearing like Christmas tree tin foil with an opening that varied from 4 feet to 2 inches in diameter and was approximately 2 feet thick. Kevin knew instinctively that he could reach through this portal, and when he did, he found it welcoming and enticing. Through the opening, Kevin saw his deceased grandfather, who invited him to go fishing and even mentioned having worms, which Kevin understood meant the best possible bait for their favorite fishing spot. Kevin reached through the portal and stepped halfway in, but then withdrew when thoughts of his children entered his mind. When he told his grandfather no, his grandfather responded, 'but Kevin, I even have worms today,' emphasizing the special nature of this fishing invitation. Suddenly, the shimmery portal disappeared and Kevin was awake. This identical experience occurred again two days later, but Kevin already knew that if he went through the portal, he could not return. Kevin described having infinite awareness and sensitivity during the experience, with his consciousness and alertness being more vivid than normal. He reported that the nurse missed his vein while starting an IV, and he was aware of everything happening during his resuscitation. The experience gave Kevin a profound understanding that there is definitely an afterlife and changed his perspective on death from great fear to no fear at all.
