Kenneth underwent a medical imaging procedure in November 1978 involving contrast material that was not supposed to reach his brain. When the doctor placed him on a machine that could turn over for tomography, the contrast product unexpectedly reached his head, causing an immediate and severe reaction. Kenneth went into clinical shock and experienced what he described as impending death. During this crisis, he saw pictures of his life flashing before his eyes in perfect chronological order, which made him realize he was dying. As the life review continued, Kenneth made a conscious decision to calm himself and not resist whatever was happening to his body. He practiced immobilization of each muscle fiber and hyperventilation techniques to manage the crisis. Kenneth told himself to let 'that thing' go through his body without resistance. All of a sudden, everything stopped and he woke up on a stretcher. When he questioned the doctor about why he wasn't immediately removed from the machine, the doctor cynically replied that they wouldn't have gotten the necessary images and that the risk had to be run, even if Kenneth had died. Kenneth later suffered terrible headaches that he could only cure with anti-allergic medication. He described this as a separation from regular life rather than a traditional tunnel experience, with his vision turning entirely inward and his senses seeming cut off from external reality. Kenneth experienced an altered sense of time and space, feeling that time either stopped or lost all meaning during the event. He compared the experience to a previous LSD experience from a decade earlier, noting similar characteristics of mind-body separation and consciousness taking an observer position.
