On August 25, 1985, Karen was thrown from a jeep during an accident in Miami, suffering a severe head injury that caused her death. A bystander resuscitated her, but she continued to slip in and out of life during surgery and remained in a coma for several weeks. During her near-death experience, Karen found herself walking with an angel guide through a beautiful realm filled with glowing light and overwhelming feelings of joy, awe, and glory. Time had no meaning in this dimension. Her guide explained things to her through nonverbal communication as they walked. Eventually, they reached an area filled with church pews containing many people praying specifically for Karen. The guide revealed that these people were praying for her recovery. Karen became aware that many of these praying individuals were deceased, though she also recognized some living people from her life. She could literally feel the power of these prayers as a strong force. During this experience, her main life purpose was explained to her, though she was told she would not remember the details until the time came to fulfill it. Karen was informed that she must return to Earth because she had important work to complete. She was also shown glimpses of her future to convince her of the necessity of returning. Upon awakening from her coma, Karen had no memories of her adult life and could only remember events from when she was five or six years old. Her family used photographs to help restore her memories of recent years. Remarkably, months later when family members described the prayer vigils and singing that had occurred during her coma, and showed her photographs of some participants, Karen recognized several people as those she had seen praying for her during her near-death experience - including some deceased family members she had never seen photos of before.
