In May 1960, seven-year-old Kale developed German measles that progressed to encephalitis, causing grand mal seizures in his upstairs bedroom. During the seizures, his spirit immediately floated to the ceiling where he calmly observed his panicked parents, Pat (stepfather) and his mother, along with guests Clarence and Sue, racing upstairs. From the ceiling, Kale watched Pat scoop up his unconscious body from the bed and carry him downstairs while he followed from above. His spirit then moved to the south bedroom window, observing his parents rush his body to the station wagon in the driveway. From this vantage point, he saw Pat hand his body to his mother and run around to drive. Moving to the east window, Kale continued watching as the car backed out and raced north toward the hospital. Throughout this crisis, while everyone else was frantic, Kale's spirit remained completely peaceful, calm, and curious. He experienced no panic despite having no legs in spirit form, no concern about floating, and no distress about the emergency situation. The out-of-body experience was one of the four clearest memories of his entire life. Twenty years later, when his mother inaccurately recalled the rescue details, Kale corrected her, saying "No you did not pick me up out the bed, Dad did." His stepfather looked at him with astonishment, confirming "That is exactly right, but how did you know?" Kale was hospitalized in a coma for four days and nearly died from the encephalitis.
