In August 1962, Judith experienced complications during the birth of her first child. After hyperemesis throughout pregnancy and difficulty dilating during labor, her doctor used hypnosis to help her relax. Following an episiotomy and the baby's sideways presentation requiring forceps delivery, Judith lost consciousness when everything went black. She found herself sliding down something resembling an auger toward an intensely bright, comforting light. The movement felt warm and peaceful with no pain or fear. During her descent, she saw cameo-like faces of her baby, mother, husband, and father, who told her "it was too soon" to leave. Despite their message, she continued sliding toward the beautiful light, feeling completely calm and smiling. Judith awakened in a different hospital room where a nurse explained she had been moved for observation due to having no blood pressure. The doctor later revealed he had administered about two minutes of anesthesia to enlarge the episiotomy and turn the baby with forceps, during which Judith apparently hemorrhaged severely. The nurse confirmed she had experienced a life-threatening drop in blood pressure requiring close monitoring. Judith kept the experience private for many years, fearing others would think her crazy, though she remained convinced of its reality. The experience was characterized by complete peace, absence of fear, and the vivid memory of the extraordinarily bright light that she knew was absolutely real.
