In February 2010, Joseph, struggling with heroin addiction and depression from a recent breakup, decided to take a massive overdose with suicidal intent. He injected approximately three times his normal dose of heroin and made it to the couch before losing consciousness. His friends heard him making a snoring sound, then crashing through a glass table. They found him blue-faced with no pulse and began CPR. Fortunately, they had Narcan (naloxone) and injected it after two minutes of resuscitation efforts. During his clinical death, Joseph found himself in a bright, dimensionless white place approaching a door with a man who had an unbreakable grip on his arm. The man repeatedly warned him, "once you go through the door, you can never come back." Joseph desperately fought against going through the door, knowing instinctively he had to resist. Just as the man reached for a key around his neck to unlock the door, the Narcan hit Joseph's system and he snapped back to consciousness. He awoke to his friends crying, his face still grey-blue from oxygen deprivation. The experience was entirely distressing rather than pleasant, feeling like being taken to the principal's office. Joseph cried for hours afterward, calling everyone he knew to express his love and emphasize the importance of living life fully. This near-death experience completely transformed his life, leading to sobriety, renewed spirituality, and the development of psychic abilities.
