In August 1962, at age 12, Joel was building a raft at scout camp when a heavy log crashed into his head. He immediately found himself floating 4-5 feet away from his body, watching as his stepfather scooped up his unconscious form and rushed him to a car. Joel's spirit moved between windows, observing the rescue efforts with complete peace and curiosity. He experienced no panic despite having no legs and floating in air. Next, he found himself 30 feet above the scene, watching people dive into the lake to search for his body underwater. From this elevated position, he could see everything except his submerged body. He watched as rescuers eventually found him, pulled him onto the dam, and began resuscitation efforts. The moment they began CPR, he was immediately back in his body. Joel remained conscious and alert throughout the out-of-body experience, feeling completely calm while everyone else was panicking. The experience was one of the four clearest memories of his life, remaining remarkably vivid decades later. He suffered severe concussion effects for five days afterward.
