Joan underwent spinal anesthetic for ankle tendon repair surgery, but the anesthetic climbed higher than intended, stopping her heart and lungs for 5-8 minutes. During this time, she experienced a profound sense of absolute Love and Oneness, feeling like being in a swimming pool of love where she was both one with it and apart from it. She heard beautiful music that was part of her essence and felt completely weightless and free. She gained knowledge without words, understanding that religions had it wrong and that there are no rules or judgment from God, only pure Love. She experienced universal connection where individual existence merged with Divine Love while maintaining her identity. Time did not exist in this realm. Though she didn't miss her earthly family during the experience, she was eventually told to return by someone (her younger brother's voice calling her back to life). The experience transformed her from Catholic theology to New Thought spirituality, though she struggled for 25 years trying to reconcile it with her family's religious beliefs before finally embracing her authentic spiritual path.
