On July 4, 1962, Jean's family was at a local lake when the adults paired with younger children who couldn't swim, leaving 4-year-old Jean unpaired. She stepped into the lake and almost immediately sank to the bottom. Rather than distress or need to breathe, she felt incredibly loved and comforted. Looking underwater, she saw twirling water that became a tunnel with a beautiful white light at its end. The light was so beautiful she was drawn to it, feeling love and peace she has never experienced since. When suddenly pulled from the water, she felt great loss and sadness, wanting to return to that comforting feeling. Only after being pulled out did she feel the need to choke and cough up water. The experience left her feeling profoundly different and changed. She reports gaining psychic abilities afterward, including premonitions about deaths and disasters that occur within seven days, and the ability to see ghosts until age thirteen. The experience has remained completely vivid in her memory throughout her life.
