At age 3-4, Irving was at a local lake with his family. He was placed in a children's area where water was chin-level, but lost his footing on the slimy bottom and went underwater. He experienced no fear or pain, instead feeling an incredible peace and seeing an unearthly bright light that appeared fractionated into squares and rectangles of golden and yellow colors. The light was extraordinarily bright but did not hurt his eyes. Throughout the experience, he had no awareness of his physical body and felt total peace, serenity, and love. The visual spectacle seemed to go on for an eternity until he was suddenly jolted back when pulled from the water. His father's memoirs confirmed he was found on the floor of the crib area. After being rescued, he felt a great loss and sadness, wanting to return to that comforting feeling. The experience has remained vivid in his memory for over 77 years and became the cornerstone of his spiritual beliefs later in life.
