On February 16, 2013, Hope experienced a severe asthma attack while preparing to take her cancer-stricken mother for a blood transfusion. After a shower, she became short of breath and took a nebulizer treatment. When she tried to dress, she suddenly couldn't breathe and called for her husband to dial 911. Paramedics administered oxygen and multiple epinephrine shots, but her heart rate continued slowing. She went into seizure preventing intubation, requiring manual CPR. Her heart stopped at the hospital. During this crisis, Hope became aware she was somewhere, hearing commotion and people. She then entered a space feeling the presence of her deceased father on her right and deceased friend Frank on her left. Though she wanted to look at them, she couldn't turn. Before her were ten brightly illuminated boxes, each a different color. She walked to each box which would open, revealing something about her life and what she felt were past lives. The last box frightened her as it wasn't completed. This prompted thoughts of her family - her dying mother, daughter with cerebral palsy, and husband who all needed her. She then heard the doctor saying she would be alright, that her heart was strong as an ox, and returned to her body. She was placed in medically induced hypothermic coma for two days. Afterward, she developed temporary psychic abilities where thinking of something would manifest it.
