Grace was a passenger in a Ford Econoline Van traveling on I-95 during early morning hours when it began to snow mixed with light rain. The vehicle skidded and rolled over, with Grace sliding sideways and breaking open the side doors. She lost consciousness and came to while trapped under the car. Unable to move her arms or speak despite hearing companions yelling to push, she was eventually freed and dragged to the roadside. During this critical period, Grace experienced herself as sitting upright slightly behind and to the right of her supine body, observing the scene from this vantage point. She could hear everyone clearly and see events unfolding, feeling disconnected from and unable to control her physical body. When the paramedic arrived with a flashlight, she watched him examine her body, shine the light in her eyes, and then declare 'this one's dead' before starting back down the hill. The shock of hearing she was dead caused her to spontaneously speak aloud 'Am I dead?' which prompted her fiancé to chase after the paramedic, insisting she was alive. This vocalization ended her out-of-body experience and returned her to her body. The only physical injury sustained was a fractured right thumb. Grace remained curious about the nature of death and somewhat annoyed at her inability to control her body during the experience.
