In February 1969, Ginnie was a passenger in a van that skidded on I-95 during snowy conditions. The vehicle rolled over, and she was ejected through the side doors, becoming trapped underneath. She suffered massive blood loss and a severe concussion, requiring paramedics to cut into her arm to find a blood vessel. After briefly regaining consciousness in the emergency room and calling for her mother, she lost consciousness again. During the medical crisis where her heart stopped, Ginnie experienced being about twenty feet above the gurney, observing the medical team working to revive her body. She felt no concern for her physical form, instead being fascinated by her formless circular existence where she seemed to roll over on a non-existent face, finding this amusing. She felt herself to be one with a mysterious space that was neither bright nor warm, experiencing complete detachment from physical concerns. A barrier prevented her from leaving to an unknown destination she felt compelled to reach. After trying three times to leave and rolling forward each time with laughter, she suddenly felt suction and returned to darkness. The experience changed her outlook profoundly - she no longer fears death, focuses intensively on family and life experiences, and approaches life fearlessly with little patience for what she perceives as stupidity.
