Duane regained consciousness in the ICU after a four-hour radical attempt to correct a failed quadruple heart bypass operation. He was laughing and joking with his wife and nurses when suddenly he experienced what he described as being "gone" and finding himself in a place void of everything yet needing nothing - a state he likened to 'Nirvana'. The experience was wonderful and peaceful, existing in what seemed to be a black void where light was not needed and he felt complete wellness. Time had no meaning in this state. He was pulled back to life by doctors removing surgical equipment from his body. Within seconds, he was back laughing and joking with the nurses and his wife. Since this experience, he has lost all fear and apprehension of the future, accepting that life could end at any moment. He welcomes and accepts the eventual return to that peaceful state.
