David, an eighteen-year-old atheist and physical anthropology student, experienced cardiac arrest while watching television. He had been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat earlier in life. When intense chest pain struck, he felt his heart stop beating and experienced blackness. Despite his devout atheist beliefs and anger at God for his suffering as a homosexual from an abusive family, his experience would profoundly transform his worldview.
Suddenly, David found himself looking at his own body with detachment, viewing it as an empty vessel. He noticed he no longer needed glasses and his Tourette's Syndrome had disappeared. He turned toward a warm light and entered a beautiful sunny garden where everything was alive. There he encountered his friend Stephen, who had died at fifteen from an aneurysm. Stephen appeared healthy and real, not like the body David had seen in the casket. Through telepathic communication, Stephen showed David his death experience - falling in the bathroom, hitting his head on the toilet, and being called toward a tunnel by a spirit guide in white. Stephen explained that death is an illusion and we never truly die, leaving Earth once we've learned all we can before returning to the spirit world. He showed David how spirits can see the living whenever they desire. When David wanted to explore a particular area, Stephen said if he went there, he couldn't return. A beautiful light David recognized as Jesus appeared and told Stephen that David had to go back, saying "You promised you would do this. And you have much left to do." David was slammed back into his body, gasping for breath. The experience transformed him from an angry atheist to a Christian, eliminating his concerns about being homosexual, which had "no meaning on the other side." He developed religious visions and psychic experiences with the deceased following this encounter.
