After eighteen hours of difficult labor, Darlene was given anesthesia through a mask for a forceps delivery. Both she and the baby were in distress, with the baby being strangled by the umbilical cord. As the anesthesia took effect, she experienced falling backwards while simultaneously falling forward toward a point between her eyes.
She traveled down a dark tunnel hearing a strident ringing that was paradoxically both loud and silent. At the tunnel's end, she saw a rapidly approaching luminous point and knew that crossing into the light meant death. Despite this knowledge, she felt total happiness and excitement, repeatedly thinking "This is it! I'm going home!" She remembered having this same experience during a childhood hemorrhage after a tonsillectomy at age eight, understanding why she had always felt she was dreaming and didn't belong to this world. At the tunnel's end, she encountered a doorstep with indescribable light composed of pure love, which she recognized as "light from the fire of God." Formless beings of love were present who communicated without words. When she tried to enter, she heard/felt "Go back, for you have not yet done what you had to do." After insisting on entering, she felt taken by the shoulders, turned around, and pushed back. The phrase "What have you done with your talents?" remained constantly in her mind. Upon returning, she felt the weight of her physical body and oppressive grey haze, hearing the midwife shouting "Breathe! Good God, Breathe!" The experience transformed her life, leading her to restart her music career, become a visual artist and writer, believing art bridges the world beyond light with this material world.
