Claud H suffered from a burst appendix that had ruptured behind his colon more than 24 hours before diagnosis, causing peritonitis. During emergency surgery, he found himself observing the operating room from above, clearly hearing machinery and conversation. When the surgeon said "I lost him, I lost him," he was surrounded by extreme non-blinding white light filled with indescribable love. He sensed others present who were happy and loving, with instant mind-to-mind communication, though he couldn't see them through the light. His grandfather Juan's hands emerged from the light - hands he recognized from childhood. Grandfather Juan, the only person who called him "Claudie," told him he was loved but it wasn't his time and must go back, promising they'd see each other again soon. He protested wanting to stay but was awakened by a nurse. The surgery lasted hours cleaning infection throughout his internal organs. After nine days hospitalized, he begged for release, confessing to the surgeon he knew he had died. Five years later, the surgeon recognized him in a restaurant and confirmed to his companion this was the patient who died and whose grandfather sent him back. The warmth and smell of his grandfather remain with him over 25 years later.
