Charles P, age 21, was canoeing with his friend Robert on the Gatineau River in Ontario when their canoe tipped in violent rapids. Robert drowned trying to swim directly to shore. Charles was pulled into the rapids for over a mile, repeatedly underwater, losing air and swallowing water. As hypothermia and exhaustion set in, a white light struck his forehead, sending energy through his body twice. All past experiences and people flowed through his consciousness as he rose out of the water into the sky. Enveloped in white light of peace and calm, he saw his body floating head-down below while scanning the beautiful landscape. He had a vision of a Vermont hillside from his youth. He consciously chose to return to life despite its difficulties, deciding to honor Robert's lost life by becoming an artist working with clay. The white light diminished and he returned to his body in the river. Later, a log impossibly steered toward him against physics, saving his life. Years later, the surgeon who treated him confirmed he had died during the experience. Charles became a renowned ceramic artist, pioneering many techniques, teaching at a university, and honoring Robert every July 13th since 1968.
