At age 15, Carl drank excessively at a party and passed out. Someone poured straight vodka into his mouth while unconscious, causing him to stop breathing multiple times. He required a blood transfusion at the hospital. While unconscious, Carl found himself in a black void, completely conscious and more aware than ever before, existing without his body. The void was total blackness and silence with no floor, walls, or light. He felt like falling without wind or other sensations, experiencing complete aloneness and disconnection. He reflected on his life through inner dialogue without images. The experience was pure thought without sensory distraction. Time seemed meaningless in this state. He suddenly returned when a doctor said he was lucky, going from complete consciousness to confusion. The void experience left him with extreme sadness, fear of death, and emotional difficulty even thinking about it. He describes feeling more real during the void than sitting at his computer today.
