At age 2.5, Brendan climbed out of his pushchair while his mother shopped, causing it to topple and striking his head on the ground. Before impact, he found himself outside his body, standing three feet away watching himself lying stationary. He observed his siblings run into the shop to fetch their mother, who threw her arms up upon seeing him and ran back for help. A shop worker in white coveralls emerged, picked him up, and bandaged his head. Throughout the experience, everything was completely silent despite seeing people's mouths moving and arms waving in panic. All vision was in silvery-gray light with no colors visible. The experience was emotionally neutral with no fear or joy. Fifty-two years later, Brendan accurately described to his brother what the shop worker had worn, shocking his brother who confirmed every detail including the white coveralls. This became his first and most vivid childhood memory, clearer than the hospital visit that followed.
