Atlanta suffered a severe accident requiring extensive medical treatment, including nine units of blood transfusion. Her leg was shattered, foot torn off, ribs and arm broken. Three days after the initial accident, while in the ICU, an unchecked pneumothorax caused her to stop breathing and her heart to cease functioning. The respiratory therapist noted her arterial blood gases were "those of an already dead person." This clinical death triggered her profound near-death experience.
During her NDE, Atlanta had both an out-of-body experience and entered another realm simultaneously. She knew everything the medical team was doing, who they were, what they did, and even what they were thinking and feeling. She met her father who had died when she was three years old, someone she had never really known and wasn't expecting to see. He guided her to a place where millions of souls welcomed her with love and acceptance. She kept saying "I don't deserve to be here" but was assured she belonged. She questioned why everything felt more real than anything in life, experiencing pure consciousness without a material brain. Atlanta demonstrated remarkable veridical perception by knowing everything the medical team did during resuscitation, including their thoughts and feelings. This telepathic awareness extended to understanding the medical procedures being performed on her body. She accurately perceived the medical team's actions while clinically dead with blood gases indicating death. The medical staff later confirmed their fear and reluctance to discuss her accurate perceptions of their actions and thoughts during the resuscitation. An authoritative voice told her "NO. She is not ready" and she was "slammed" back into her pain-ridden body. She underwent thirteen surgeries over four months. Interestingly, a neurologist later used ketamine four times during her surgeries to study NDEs, but it only produced OBEs and imaginative trips, nothing like her actual NDE. The experience eliminated her suicidal thoughts and gave her a sense of life's purpose.
