This historical account from The Morning Record, September 21, 1897, describes William Graham, a consumptive (tuberculosis patient) living in Santa Monica, California. On Saturday night, Graham apparently died and an undertaker was called to prepare his body for burial. His grieving wife was eventually allowed into the room where she threw herself upon his body, straining it to her breast and desperately calling for him to come back. After several minutes of her crying and pleading, observers noticed a slight shudder run through Graham's body. Restoratives and massage were applied, and within an hour Graham was able to speak. Graham described leaving this life and journeying into another country with a beautiful road lined with stately trees and music in the air. His deceased father came along the pathway to meet him, and they had a greeting and conversation. He then felt torn away and called back to his worn, aching body by his wife's insistent calls. Though Graham was revived, the report notes he could not last more than a few days due to his consumption. This case represents early documentation of near-death experience phenomena including otherworldly journey, deceased relatives, and revival through loved one's calling.
